Changing bathroom tiles: how much you’ll really pay

Changing bathroom tiles in Valencia costs between 25 and 90 euros per square metre all-in — material, labour, demolition of old tiles and waste management. For a 4 m² bathroom with walls tiled to half height (around 10-12 m² of surface area), you’re looking at a budget of between 600 and 1,400 euros just for tiles and installation. If you tile all the way to the ceiling and reach 18-20 m², the bill goes up to 900-2,200 euros.

Those ranges are wide because the final price depends on many factors: the type of tile you choose, the format, the laying pattern and the condition of the wall beneath the old tiles. Let’s get into the real numbers.

If what you need is a complete quote for the entire renovation (not just tiles), we recommend our online calculator — you’ll have a personalised estimate in 2 minutes.

Tile price per m² by material type

Not all tiles cost the same — not by a long shot. Here’s a table with the prices being quoted in Valencia in 2026, material only:

Tile typePrice/m² (material only)CharacteristicsWhere to find it
Basic ceramic (red body)8-18 €Affordable, good colour range. Walls only.Leroy Merlin, local warehouses
Standard porcelain (30x60, 60x60)18-40 €Durable, versatile, suitable for floors and walls. The best seller.Pamesa, Tau, large retail stores

Artisan zellige (10x10, 13x13)60-150 €Handmade, irregular pieces, unique finish.Specialist shops, imports
Hydraulic mosaic (20x20 cm)40-80 €Traditional geometric designs. Floor or accent wall.Artisan manufacturers, Vives

Market prices in Valencia and surrounding area. May vary by supplier and quantity.

Important fact: According to ASCER (the ceramic sector association), the province of Castellon produces 94% of the ceramics manufactured in Spain and is the largest ceramic production cluster in Europe. This means that in Valencia you have direct access to the manufacturers: better prices and more variety than anywhere else in the country.

Our recommendation is clear: don’t skimp on the floor material. The floor takes footsteps, water and cleaning products every day. A mid-range porcelain tile (25-40 €/m²) will last 20 years without issues. A cheap 10 €/m² ceramic can start wearing or staining within 3-4 years. On walls you have more room to adjust.

If you want to see how these materials look in real bathrooms, take a look at our designs: the Mediterranean Zellige for a bathroom with artisan character, the Large Format Stone for a minimalist clean finish, or the Terrazzo Revival if you like something bolder.

Labour: how much it costs to install tiles in Valencia

This is where many people get a surprise. Material can be 40-50% of the total cost, but labour weighs just as much or more. These are the standard rates for professional tilers in Valencia and province in 2026:

WorkPrice/m²Notes
Old tile demolition8-14 €/m²Includes removal and surface cleaning. Goes up if there’s a double layer.
Surface regularisation5-10 €/m²Only if the wall is uneven after stripping. Not always necessary.
Standard ceramic/porcelain installation18-28 €/m²Straight laying, mid-format (30x60, 60x60).
Large-format installation (>60x120)28-40 €/m²Requires suction cups, more time and experience.
Zellige/mosaic installation30-45 €/m²Many pieces, many joints, lots of detail.
Diagonal or herringbone pattern+5-10 €/m² on base priceMore cuts, more material waste, more time.
Waste management (skip)150-300 € (fixed price)Construction skip + transport to authorised disposal site.

What we see in practice: a good tiler in Valencia charges between 22 and 30 €/m² for standard installation. There are cheaper ones, but the quality of the result varies hugely. A 50 €/m² tile badly installed is worse than a 20 €/m² tile well installed. Always.

Factors that drastically change the price

Changing tiles isn’t all the same. These are the four factors that move the budget the most:

1. Tile format

A 30x60 cm tile installs quickly with little waste. A 120x260 cm large-format tile requires two people, specialist suction cups, specific adhesive and an installer experienced with ceramic slabs. Labour can go from 22 €/m² to 38 €/m².

That said, large format has an advantage: fewer joints. And fewer joints means a bathroom that’s easier to clean and looks more elegant. Worth it if the budget allows.

2. Laying pattern

Laying tiles straight (running bond or half-bond) is the fastest and most economical. But if you want a herringbone pattern, diagonal or chevron, things get more complex:

  • Straight / half-bond: base price
  • Diagonal (45°): +20-25% in labour and +10% in material due to cuts
  • Herringbone: +25-35% in labour, many perimeter cuts
  • Chevron: +30-40% in labour, and chevron tiles are more expensive to begin with

3. Tiling height

This directly affects how many square metres you need to cover:

  • Half height (up to 1.20-1.50 m): The most economical option. The rest is painted with anti-damp paint. 10-14 m² of tile in a 4 m² bathroom.
  • Full height to ceiling (2.40-2.50 m): You double the tile surface area. 18-22 m² in the same bathroom. But the result is cleaner and easier to maintain.

The difference between half height and full ceiling in a small bathroom can be 300-600 euros in tile and labour alone. It’s not trivial.

4. Substrate condition

When old tiles are stripped, the wall underneath can be perfect or a complete mess. If the render has come away, if there’s damp, if the wall isn’t plumb… it needs to be repaired, levelled and re-plastered before tiling. That extra work can add 5-12 €/m² to the budget.

In 1960s-80s flats in neighbourhoods like Ruzafa, Benimaclet or Patraix, the substrate usually needs work. In more recent buildings (2000s onwards), it’s typically acceptable.

Changing tiles without removing the old ones: the options that exist

You don’t always need to strip. If your bathroom has tiles in good condition (well adhered, no damp behind) but you simply don’t like them, there are alternatives:

Tile over tile

You can install new tiles on top of the old ones using specialist adhesive (C2S1 or C2S2 type). It’s faster and cleaner than stripping.

Advantages:

  • You save on demolition (8-14 €/m²) and waste management (150-300 €)
  • Less dust and noise
  • 1-2 fewer days of work

Disadvantages:

  • You lose 1-1.5 cm of space per wall (noticeable in a small bathroom)
  • Only works if the old tiles are well adhered and the surface is flat
  • Door frames, sockets and water outlets need adapting
  • Not possible if you want to change the plumbing behind

Total price: 30-55 €/m² (material + installation, no demolition).

Tile paint

Another option is painting existing tiles with epoxy or ceramic-specific paint. It’s not what we most recommend for a main bathroom, but for a guest WC or secondary bathroom it can work.

Price: 15-25 €/m² including primer + two coats + labour. Estimated durability: 3-5 years if done well. May need touching up after.

PVC panels or vinyl sheets

Quick and affordable option. They stick directly onto existing tiles. There are tile, marble and stone effect finishes.

Price: 20-40 €/m² installed. Limitation: Not recommended for direct shower zones. For dry walls it can work.

Real budget examples: small bathroom and medium bathroom

Let’s look at two specific scenarios so you can see the numbers. These budgets are only for changing tiles — they don’t include plumbing, fixtures, shower screen or electrical work.

Example 1: Small bathroom (4 m² floor area)

  • Surface to tile: 16 m² (walls to ceiling) + 4 m² floor = 20 m² total
  • Tile chosen: Pamesa 30x60 cm porcelain, cement effect, 22 €/m²
  • Straight laying, standard format

All-in cost per m²: 73 €/m²

Use our calculator to adapt these numbers to your specific case.

Example 2: Medium bathroom (6 m² floor area)

  • Surface to tile: 22 m² (walls to half height 1.5 m) + 6 m² floor = 28 m² total
  • Tile chosen: Porcelanosa 60x120 cm porcelain, marble effect, 52 €/m²
  • Straight laying, large format

TOTAL3,338 €

All-in cost per m²: 119 €/m²

The difference between the two examples isn’t just size. It’s the jump between standard porcelain and large-format premium. Material goes from 484 euros to 1,638 euros and labour increases because installing large pieces requires more skill and more time.

Where to buy tiles in Valencia and surrounding area

You have the good fortune of living in the area with the highest concentration of ceramic manufacturers in the world. Here are your main options:

Shops and showrooms

  • Porcelanosa: Showrooms in El Saler (next to the shopping centre) and in Valencia city centre. Mid-to-high and premium range. At the Porcelanosa shop in El Saler or the Pamesa showroom in Vila-real you can see and touch virtually any format being manufactured today.
  • Leroy Merlin: Stores in Alfafar, Paterna and Burjassot. Good selection of affordable and mid-range. Competitive prices, but less variety in large formats.
  • Bricomart: In Massanassa. Building materials at warehouse prices. Good for extras (adhesive, spacers, grout).

Direct from factory (Castellon)

Castellon is an hour from Valencia via the AP-7. It’s worth the trip if you want to buy material for more than 20 m²:

  • Pamesa (Castellon): Accessible large format, great value for money. 18-55 €/m².
  • Tau Ceramica (Castellon): Affordable large formats.
  • Vives Azulejos y Gres (Castellon): Designs with personality, mid-to-high range.
  • Keraben / Metropol (Nules): Innovation in textures and finishes.

Buying direct from the factory can mean 15-25% savings compared to shop prices, especially on large orders. Many factories have outlet or end-of-line sections with 40-60% discounts.

Practical tip

Always buy 10-15% more tile than you need. Cuts, breakages and mistakes always happen. And if a tile breaks in 5 years’ time, having spare stock is the difference between a 20-minute fix and a nightmare trying to find a discontinued reference.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to change bathroom tiles without touching anything else?

Tiles only (demolition + material + installation + waste) in a 4 m² bathroom tiled to full ceiling height: between 1,200 and 2,500 euros depending on the tile chosen. With basic ceramic you’ll be at the lower end. With large-format porcelain or zellige you’ll be at the top.

Can you put new tiles over old ones?

Yes, as long as the old tiles are well adhered and there’s no damp. A specialist C2S1-type adhesive is used. You save on demolition, but you lose space and can’t inspect the wall condition. Works well in guest WCs and secondary bathrooms.

How many days does it take to change bathroom tiles?

A small bathroom (4 m²): 3-5 working days. A medium bathroom (6 m²): 5-7 days. If the substrate needs repairing or the laying pattern is complex, it can take 1-2 extra days.

Is porcelain better than ceramic for the bathroom?

For the floor, yes, without question. Porcelain has lower water absorption (<0.5% compared to 3-10% for ceramic), is more resistant to impacts and stains, and holds up better against aggressive cleaning products. For walls, ceramic works perfectly well and is more affordable.

Is it worth going to Castellon to buy tiles?

If you’re buying more than 20-25 m², yes it’s worth it. The savings can be 15-25% and the variety you see in factory showrooms isn’t available in any shop. Factories like Pamesa, Tau or Keraben have outlet sections with end-of-line pieces at very attractive prices.

The tile makes the difference: choose well

Changing the tiles is the partial renovation with the greatest visual impact in a bathroom. You don’t need to touch plumbing, move fixtures or change the screen. New tiles alone make the bathroom look completely different.

The most honest advice we can give you: first define the total budget you want to spend, choose the tile you like within that range, and then find an installer with experience in that specific format. Don’t hire the cheapest — hire the one who works well with the type of piece you’ve chosen.
