Choosing a basin type: a decision that affects your bathroom for 20 years
The basin seems like one of the easy decisions in a bathroom renovation. Then it turns out there are four distinct types with completely different installations, the choice determines what furniture you can have (or whether you can have furniture at all), and the price ranges from €40 to €800 just for the basin, not counting installation.
At Reformarte we install all types across the Valencian Community. This guide covers what we tell every client who asks which is best: it depends on what you have, what you want, and how much you want to spend on maintenance over the next fifteen years.
The four basin types: clear classification
- Vessel / countertop: the basin sits on top of a countertop or vanity unit — elevated and fully visible.
- Undermount / integrated into countertop: installed beneath the countertop board, or basin and countertop are one integrated piece.
- Semi-recessed: the rear half integrates into the vanity, the front half protrudes.
- Wall-hung: fixed directly to the wall, no vanity underneath.
Type 1: Vessel basin (countertop / over-counter)
Advantages
- Strong visual impact — the most commanding basin type in a space
- Maximum variety of shapes: circular, rectangular, stone, artisan ceramic, tempered glass
- Simple installation: just drain and tap, no countertop cutting required
Disadvantages
- Height: can be uncomfortable for children or short users
- Splashing: shallower bowls splash more
- The perimeter joint between basin and countertop accumulates water and soap residue
Brands and prices
- Budget (40-120€): Roca Inspira Round, Spanish sanitary ceramic brands
- Mid-range (120-300€): Roca Stone, Duravit Luv, Villeroy & Boch Artis
- Premium (300-800€+): Agape Spoon, Antonio Lupi Clou, Italian artisan ceramic
Type 2: Undermount / integrated countertop basin
Advantages
- Easiest to clean: continuous countertop, no accumulating edges
- Clean, minimalist look
- Standard height: comfortable for adults at 80-85 cm vanity height
- Robust when integrated into compact mineral countertop
Disadvantages
- More expensive installation: countertop must be precisely cut
- The countertop matters: budget laminate deteriorates; invest in compact mineral (Silestone, Corian) or ceramic
- Changing the basin means changing the countertop if they are one piece
Brands and prices
- Basin only for undermount (60-250€): Roca Neo, Roca Gap, Duravit D-Code, Geberit Xeno
- Basin+countertop set (120-600€): IKEA Godmorgon (120-180€ complete with vanity), Roca Gap (200-350€), Silestone/Cosentino custom countertops (400-1,000€)
Type 3: Semi-recessed basin
Advantages
- Space saving: total depth of vanity+basin is less than a full vessel
- Good visual balance
- Common solution for smaller bathrooms
Disadvantages
- More complex cleaning where basin meets vanity
- Compatible only with specific vanity units
- Less variety of forms
Brands and prices
Roca Debba, Roca Gap N, Duravit ME by Starck: 150-400€
Type 4: Wall-hung basin
Advantages
- Floor cleaning is very easy — nothing underneath
- Visually enlarges small bathrooms (3-4 m²)
- Most economical option (basin from €60, no vanity cost)
- Natural ventilation of the floor zone
Disadvantages
- No under-basin storage
- Pipes are visible unless routed in-wall
- Requires solid wall or reinforced partition
- Can look sparse without good supporting design
Brands and prices
- Budget (40-100€): Roca Meridian, Roca Mini
- Mid-range (100-250€): Duravit D-Code, Geberit Acanto, Villeroy & Boch O.novo
- Premium (250-600€): Duravit ME by Starck, Geberit ONE, Laufen Pro

Frequently asked questions about basin types
How much does a countertop basin cost? From €40 (basic ceramic) to €800+ (design or natural stone). Most common mid-range for renovations: 100-300€.
Is the IKEA basin good quality? The Godmorgon+Odensvik combination (150-300€ complete with vanity) offers hard-to-beat value in the budget-to-mid range. The basin ceramic quality is good; the limitation is standard design and limited personalisation.
Which basin is easiest to clean? Undermount (continuous countertop) and wall-hung (free floor) are the easiest. The vessel basin has the perimeter joint that accumulates residue.
