The question tends to come up in autumn: is it a good idea to renovate the bathroom in winter? Many clients feel they should wait until spring or summer. That’s not necessarily true. In many cases, winter is a good time to renovate. But there are things you need to know.

What really changes with cold weather

Cold primarily affects two materials: tile adhesives and grout.

Tile adhesives: powder adhesives mixed with water have a minimum application temperature. Most manufacturers specify they should not be applied below 5-8°C on the substrate or in the ambient temperature. Some improved products lower this limit to 0-5°C.

In practice, in Valencia, indoor temperatures rarely drop that low. A flat — even an empty one in a closed building — rarely goes below 10-12°C in winter, even on the coldest days. The problem is more theoretical than real for 90% of the work we do in the city.

Where you do need to be careful:

  • Unoccupied rural properties in the Valencia inland areas (Requena, highland areas): can be at 5-8°C in January or February
  • Empty flats with windows open during work for drying: if heavily ventilated, temperature can drop

Grout: same issue as adhesives. Minimum application temperature generally 5-8°C. Cold slows curing and can cause cracking if the temperature drops after application.

Longer curing time: this is real and needs to be factored in. At 10°C, tile adhesive curing time can be double that at 20°C. What takes 24 hours in summer can take 48 hours in winter. This affects the project timeline: a bathroom that takes 5 days in summer may take 7-8 days in winter.

Silicone sealant: silicone also has minimum application and curing temperatures. Below 5°C, curing slows dramatically or doesn’t happen correctly. In Valencia this is rarely an issue, but worth noting.

What doesn’t change at all

The materials themselves: tiles, porcelain, toilets, washbasins, taps, shower screens. Unaffected by cold.

Plumbing: hot water remains accessible. Plumbing work doesn’t depend on ambient temperature.

Electrical work: installing circuits, light fittings, switch points. No temperature dependency.

Days without a usable bathroom: the same in winter as in summer.

The real advantages of renovating in winter

Here’s what few people tell you:

Tradesman availability. In Valencia (and throughout Spain), peak renovation season is spring-summer. In September-October there are long waiting lists, the best professionals are booked up and you may wait weeks for work to start.

In November-February, availability is much greater. You can often get work started within 1-2 weeks rather than 1-2 months.

Better pricing. Not all tradespeople will say so openly, but in the quiet season prices tend to be more negotiable. A 5-10% difference is common. On a 6,000 € renovation, that’s 300-600 € saved.

More attention to your job. In summer, a team may have several projects running simultaneously and yours may not get full attention. In winter, with less demand, attention is better.

Materials available: distributor stock is fuller in winter. In summer, some formats and colours may be out of stock.

The workers themselves perform better. Nobody says this but it’s true: tiling in a bathroom without ventilation in July at 38°C is genuinely hard. In winter the work is more comfortable and finish quality tends to be better.

Practical precautions for winter work

Temporary heating: if the property is empty or heating is non-functional during work, a temporary construction heater may be needed to keep the space above 10°C. An electric construction heater costs 50-150 €/week to hire. Worth it to avoid adhesive problems.

Don’t over-ventilate: ventilation is needed for adhesives to cure, but in winter don’t leave everything open for hours. Moderate ventilation, not a cold draught running continuously for days.

More curing time means more time to change your mind: if a client sees the result before the grout has fully cured and wants to change something, there’s more time to act in winter. Though in practice this isn’t something to plan on.

Valencia vs northern Spain

In Valencia, the Mediterranean climate makes the difference between summer and winter renovation small. January outdoor minimums average 7-9°C, but interiors of flats are always warmer.

In Galicia, Asturias, the Basque Country or inland Castile, the situation is different. Outdoor temperatures of 0-3°C are common in December-January, and unheated interiors can drop below 8°C. There, real seasonal restrictions for certain tiling work do exist.

In Valencia, honestly, winter is perfectly viable for bathroom renovation. We carry work year-round without significant differences in outcomes.
