Renovating a bathroom in Elche: a big city with still-reasonable prices

There is something about Elche that many outsiders do not know: it is the third largest city in the Valencian Community, with over 230,000 inhabitants according to the INE. It is not a village, nor a satellite of Alicante. It is a city with a life of its own, an impressive heritage — the Palmeral de Elche is a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and a housing market that still allows you to buy and renovate without mortgaging your future.

That said, Elche has its own rules when it comes to renovating a bathroom. The neighbourhoods are very different from each other, the water is as hard as in Alicante (if not harder), and the supply of local professionals is broad but uneven. This guide is written with the flats and houses of Elche specifically in mind, not a copy-paste of a generic guide with the city name changed.

Elche neighbourhoods: what you will find in each area

Historic centre (around the Basilica of Santa Maria)

The heart of Elche, between the Basilica of Santa Maria, the Calahorra and the Parque Municipal, has a charming old town with its complications. Properties range from rehabilitated town houses to apartment blocks from the 1950s-70s inserted between the historic fabric.

  • Bathrooms of 2-3 m2 in old houses, sometimes without direct ventilation
  • Old pipes (lead in the oldest buildings, galvanised iron in the 60s-70s ones)
  • Difficult access on pedestrian streets in the historic centre
  • Enormous potential if renovated with good judgement: flats in Elche’s centre appreciate well

Altabix

Altabix is Elche’s quintessential residential expansion neighbourhood. With construction mainly from the 1980s-2000s, wide streets and good urban planning, it is where many middle-class families live.

  • Bathrooms of 4-5 m2 as standard
  • Bathtub present in practically all of them
  • Copper or galvanised plumbing depending on the decade
  • Good access for works: spacious lifts, easy parking, accessible streets
  • Competitive prices for renovation

Carrus

Carrus is the most populous neighbourhood in Elche. Densely built during the 1960s-80s to house workers from the shoe industry, it has a working-class character reflected in its functional architecture. It is a neighbourhood with a lot of life, its own market and an important multicultural community.

  • Residential blocks of 4-8 floors with small lifts or no lift at all
  • Bathrooms of 3-4 m2, functional but unpretentious
  • Plumbing that needs renewal in most cases
  • Among the lowest renovation prices in Elche due to less logistical complexity
  • High demand for affordable renovations and bathtub-to-shower conversions

Outlying areas (Torrellano, La Marina, Arenales del Sol)

Elche has an enormous municipal area that includes outlying districts such as Torrellano (near the airport), La Marina and Arenales del Sol (on the coast). Each has its own characteristics:

  • Torrellano: Town houses and detached homes, spacious bathrooms, good access
  • Arenales del Sol: Beach apartments with the same humidity and salt challenges as any coastal area
  • La Marina: Residential developments with a high proportion of European residents, north-European style bathrooms that sometimes require adaptations

Real bathroom renovation prices in Elche

Prices in Elche are, as a general rule, 5-10% lower than in Valencia city and similar to or slightly below Alicante city. The reason is straightforward: logistics are easier, there is a good supply of professionals and living costs are lower.

Why is Carrus cheaper?

It is not a matter of material or labour quality. It is pure logistics. Carrus buildings are functional: wide entrance halls, lifts that can take a shower tray, streets where you can park a van. There are no heritage restrictions, no inaccessible pedestrian streets. Everything flows faster and with fewer complications, and that translates into a more competitive final price.

Elche’s hard water: a real problem that needs addressing

Elche’s water comes mainly from the Tajo-Segura water transfer and desalination plants, with hardness exceeding 35 French hydrometric degrees in many areas. This is not an abstract technical figure: you notice it every day in the white marks on the tap, in the shower screen that you cannot get clean and in the water heater losing efficiency year after year.

If you are going to renovate the bathroom, you have three options for dealing with limescale:

  1. Install a domestic water softener (800-1,500 euros): This is the definitive solution. It is placed at the main water inlet and protects the entire home’s installation. If you are renovating, it is the best time to do it.
  2. Choose taps with anti-limescale systems: Some tap models incorporate special filters and aerators that reduce limescale build-up. They do not eliminate the problem but make it manageable.
  3. Shower screen with anti-limescale treatment: Treated glass repels water and prevents limescale from adhering. The price difference compared to untreated glass is 80-150 euros, and the difference in daily cleaning is enormous.

Bathtub-to-shower conversion (from 1,500 euros)

This is the star renovation in Elche, especially in Carrus and the historic centre. In Carrus because the population is ageing and floor-level showers are much safer and more accessible. In the centre because the bathrooms are so small that the bathtub should never have been there.

Full renovation of a sole bathroom (from 3,200 euros)

Many flats in Elche have only one bathroom. If it is the only one you have, it needs to work for the whole family. A full renovation — with complete demolition, new plumbing, modern tiles, current sanitary ware and good taps — transforms the daily experience. Explore our design catalogue to find the combination that suits you.

Two-bathroom simultaneous renovation (from 6,000 euros)

In Altabix and the developments, many homes have two bathrooms. Renovating them simultaneously saves between 10% and 15% compared to doing them separately: one team mobilisation, one skip, one bulk material purchase.

Adapted bathroom for elderly people (from 2,500 euros)

Elche has a significant ageing population. Adapting the bathroom with a flush shower, grab bars, C3 class non-slip flooring and thermostatic taps to prevent scalding is a quick renovation (4-5 days) that can radically change a person’s quality of life.

How to choose a renovation company in Elche

Elche has a large supply of construction professionals, a legacy of decades of industrial activity. But not all have specific experience in bathroom renovations, which is a technical job requiring knowledge of plumbing, waterproofing and finishes.

Criteria you should consider:

  • Verifiable references: Photos of previous work and, if possible, contact with former clients
  • Detailed fixed-price quote: Be wary of quotes that say “complete bathroom renovation: 3,000 euros” without breaking anything down. A good quote has a line for each item
  • Written warranty: Minimum 2 years on materials and labour
  • Prior technical visit: Nobody can quote a renovation without seeing the bathroom, the installations and the access conditions
  • VAT included in the price: Do not let them give you the price without VAT and then add 10% or 21% you were not expecting

Materials that work in Elche

For floors and walls

  • Rectified medium-to-large format porcelain (60x60, 60x120 cm): Fewer joints, less surface where limescale accumulates, a cleaner and more modern appearance. Valencian manufacturers like Pamesa have collections with excellent value for money.
  • Light, neutral colours: Whites, light greys, beiges. In small bathrooms (which are the majority in Elche), light tones multiply the sense of space.
  • Thin grout in a colour similar to the tile: To minimise the visual impact of joints and the effect of limescale on them.

For taps

  • Quality chrome in inland areas (centre, Altabix, Carrus): With anti-limescale aerators and brands that offer easy-to-find replacements.
  • Inox or PVD in coastal outlying areas (Arenales del Sol): To withstand the double aggression of water limescale and airborne salt.

For shower screens

  • Tempered glass with anti-limescale treatment: It is not a luxury, it is a necessity in Elche. The difference between cleaning a treated screen and an untreated one, with Elche’s water, is 5 minutes versus 20 minutes each time.

Frequently asked questions about bathroom renovations in Elche

Does Elche’s water really damage taps that much?

Yes. The hardness of Elche’s water is among the highest in the Valencian Community. Without a water softener, quality chrome taps start showing visible deposits in 2-3 years. With a softener, the same taps can last 15-20 years without problems. It is one of the most cost-effective investments you can make.

How long does a full renovation take in Elche?

A full renovation of a medium bathroom (4-5 m2) in a flat in Altabix or Carrus takes between 7 and 10 working days. In the historic centre, it can extend by 2-3 days due to access logistics and the possibility of encountering surprises in old installations.

Can I access the Plan Renhata living in Elche?

Yes. The Plan Renhata from the Valencian Regional Government covers the entire Community, including Elche. The requirements are that the property is over 20 years old and that the renovation includes a complete bathroom or kitchen renewal. Calls are published annually.

Do you also work in Elche’s outlying areas?

Yes. We cover the entire municipal area of Elche, including Torrellano, La Marina, Arenales del Sol, Santa Pola, Crevillente and nearby municipalities. Coverage in the coastal outlying areas includes the use of specific anti-humidity and anti-salt materials.

Does renovating the bathroom add value to my flat in Elche?

Definitely. According to property market data, a renovated bathroom can increase a property’s value by between 3% and 7%. In Elche, where the housing market is in moderate growth, a well-done bathroom renovation is one of the investments with the best return: you spend 4,000-6,000 euros and can recover double in sale value.

Your bathroom in Elche deserves a renovation done with local knowledge

Elche is not just any city. With its millenary Palmeral, its Basilica of Santa Maria where the Misteri d’Elx is performed, its shoe industry that has given the city its entrepreneurial character and its neighbourhoods so different from each other, it deserves renovations that understand the local context.

At Reformarte we do not treat Elche as “another city in Alicante province.” We know that the water in Carrus is just as hard as in Altabix, that the houses in the centre have pipes that tell stories and that the apartments in Arenales need materials that withstand the summer.
