The bathroom is the smallest room in the house and, almost without exception, the worst ventilated. You spend time in there every day — sealed in, surrounded by humidity and airborne chemicals — and nobody thinks about that when planning a renovation. Yet bathroom air quality is what you breathe first thing in the morning, with the mirror fogged up and the window still shut.
This isn’t abstract. We’re talking about mould growing in the grout, paints that keep releasing VOCs — volatile organic compounds — for weeks after they’ve dried, and cheap chipboard units off-gassing formaldehyde. All of it trapped in a four-square-metre box. Let’s look at what determines that air and what you can actually do during a renovation to make it genuinely healthy.
What defines bathroom air quality — and where VOCs come in
Three things, essentially. Humidity, which determines whether mould takes hold. Air turnover, which determines whether vapours escape or build up. And materials, which determine how many toxins are in the air to begin with.
The main culprits are VOCs: volatile organic compounds. That’s the technical name for the gases released by paints, varnishes, adhesives, sealants, and some furniture. The WHO estimates that concentrations of certain indoor air pollutants can be two to five times higher indoors than outside — and in a small, poorly ventilated space like a bathroom, that gap is even more pronounced. Formaldehyde is the best-known member of the group; it’s classified as a carcinogen and lurks in a lot of low-grade chipboard.
Humidity is the other major factor. A bathroom that doesn’t dry out properly is a mould factory, and mould doesn’t just smell bad — it releases spores that aggravate asthma and allergies. Ventilation: cheapest, simplest, biggest impact
Before spending a penny on eco-friendly paints, make sure the air in your bathroom actually changes. It’s the single biggest factor and the most neglected.
The quick test: after your shower, if the mirror takes more than ten minutes to clear, your ventilation isn’t up to scratch. Full stop. It doesn’t matter how lovely the tiles are.
If you have a window, use it — five minutes open after every shower does more than any air freshener. If you don’t, an extractor fan stops being optional. And not just any extractor. Spain’s Código Técnico de la Edificación (CTE — the national building code) already mandates minimum air-change rates in bathrooms for exactly this reason.

Our honest take, after many renovations: the hygrostatic extractor is the one that genuinely earns its keep in a windowless bathroom. The fact that it switches on by itself when humidity spikes and carries on for a while after you’ve left is the difference between a bathroom that dries out and one that grows mould in the grout. The kind that only runs while the light’s on almost always falls short.
Materials: what you put on the walls matters too
Once ventilation is sorted, it’s time to look at what the bathroom is actually made of. Not all materials are equal in what they put into the air.
Porcelain stoneware and ceramic tile are inert: they don’t emit VOCs and they don’t absorb moisture the way a porous surface does. That’s why the vast majority of bathroom wall and floor finishes in Spain are ceramic, and done properly it’s one of the healthiest choices you can make. The major tile manufacturers based in Castellón, grouped under ASCER, produce to European emissions standards without any trouble.
Microcement is another option — a seamless surface with no grout lines, which is precisely where mould hides. Fewer joints means fewer places for dirt and moisture to accumulate. If you go that route, insist on water-based finishes rather than solvent-based ones.
Where you really need to pay attention is furniture. Cheap chipboard is the usual suspect for formaldehyde emissions. For a bathroom unit that’s also going to live in a humid environment, look for boards certified for low emissions (class E1, or preferably E0), or go for more solid materials altogether. Low-VOC paint: what to actually look for
Paint is where it’s easiest to be misled, and where marketing creates the most noise. “Ecological”, “natural”, “eco-friendly” — plenty of labels that don’t actually tell you anything specific.
What matters is one number: the VOC content, measured in grams per litre and listed in the product’s technical data sheet. The lower the better. Conventional paints can register high values; low-VOC paints come in much lower, and products marketed as “zero VOC” typically sit at or below 5 g/l.
For a bathroom you need to balance two things: low VOC and moisture resistance. A cheap matt emulsion won’t cope with steam — it’ll peel and stain within a year. Look for paint specifically designed for wet areas, with anti-mould properties and the lowest VOC content you can find within that category. One tip that never fails: smell it. If the fumes hit you as soon as you open the tin, that’s VOCs evaporating. Low-VOC paints barely have a smell. And regardless of which paint you choose, ventilate during application and keep ventilating afterwards. No excuses.
The right order for a full renovation
If you’re doing a complete bathroom overhaul, here’s the sequence we recommend to give you the healthiest possible result: first, sort the ventilation (hygrostatic extractor or a window that actually opens properly); then choose inert surfaces (ceramic, porcelain, water-based microcement); next, select low-emission furniture; and finally, finish with low-VOC anti-damp paint. The last trick is respecting the curing time — let everything dry out fully and ventilate heavily before you start using the bathroom daily. Those first few days are when VOC off-gassing peaks.
This is exactly the sort of thing that’s easy to get right in a planned renovation and very difficult to retrofit.
