Have you asked a couple of companies to quote your bathroom and got back the same number as your neighbour who lives inland? That’s a red flag. A bathroom renovation in El Campello doesn’t follow the same playbook as one in the middle of Madrid, and anyone who tells you otherwise has never worked on the coast. El Campello and Sant Joan d’Alacant are two neighbouring towns just north of Alicante city, with a similar profile: coastal housing stock, 1970s and 80s apartment blocks, and the Mediterranean practically on the doorstep. What applies to one tends to apply to the other. Let’s get to the point.
Bathroom renovation in El Campello: why it plays by different rules
The air along the seafront and second line carries salt. That salt eats through cheap chrome-plated taps in three or four years, pits aluminium shower screen profiles and seizes any hinge that isn’t stainless steel. This isn’t theory — we see it every week in flats along the El Campello promenade and in the Sant Joan urbanisations that face the sea.
Then there’s the water. The Alacantí area has some of the hardest water in Spain, sitting at roughly 35–50 French hardness degrees. The result: limescale everywhere. White marks on shower screens that won’t shift no matter how hard you scrub, taps that lose flow, boilers that give up earlier than they should. If you renovate the bathroom without tackling this at the same time, you’re leaving the job half done.
And then there’s the classic coastal problem: the holiday flat. Closed from October to June, unventilated. The trap dries out, mould moves in, and come July the bathroom greets you with a musty smell and black grout lines.

Prices in El Campello and Sant Joan track closely with Alicante city. The variable is location: seafront properties cost more because salt-resistant materials are a necessity here, not a luxury.

Materials that actually stand up to coastal life
There’s no room to wing it here. If your property is close to the sea, these are the materials we recommend without hesitation:
- AISI 316 stainless steel taps or PVD-finish fittings. More expensive than chrome-plated, but they last three times longer in salty air.
- Stainless steel or anodised aluminium shower screen profiles. Standard aluminium pits.
- Epoxy grout instead of cement-based grout. Doesn’t absorb water, won’t harbour mould and wipes clean in seconds.
- Low-absorption porcelain tiles (below 0.5% absorption) for floors and walls.
- Marine-grade sealants. Standard ones crack with salt and sun.
Don’t overlook a water softener
If you’re already opening up the plumbing, it’s the perfect moment to fit a whole-home water softener. They run around €800–€1,500 installed and extend the life of your taps, shower screen, boiler and pipes considerably. The limescale in this area is aggressive enough that the device pays for itself. The flat that’s empty all winter: what to do
Many bathrooms in El Campello and Sant Joan are only used in summer. That changes how you should think about the renovation. What we recommend:
- A humidity-sensor extractor fan that switches itself on when needed, even when the flat is unoccupied.
- A passive ventilation grille in the bathroom door so some air can circulate even with everything shut.
- Epoxy grout throughout, so mould has nowhere to grip during the closed-up months.
An old trick worth passing on for when you leave the flat: before you lock up, pour a small amount of cooking oil down the plughole. It slows down evaporation in the trap and prevents that sewer smell that greets you when you arrive in July. Small detail, big difference.
Sant Joan d’Alacant: a slightly different picture
Although the two towns go hand in hand, Sant Joan has its own nuances. The town centre, set back from the seafront, gets less salt exposure — so there, you don’t always need to go full AISI 316 on everything. The Fabraquer area and the urbanisations linking through to San Juan Beach are a different matter: they’re fully exposed. Sant Joan has around 24,000 residents according to the INE (Spain’s National Statistics Institute), with a good share of detached houses and chalets from the 1980s–2000s, where bathrooms tend to be roomier and lend themselves to larger shower trays and double basins.
El Campello leans more towards the pure holiday apartment: blocks facing the promenade and Muchavista Beach, compact bathrooms of 2–4 m², and lots of owner-landlords who let by the week.
